NLP Can Help You Quit Smoking

Author: Shaun Parker

Since the UK smoking ban in public places started in 2007, smokers have been forced to stand on the streets puffing away while braving the wind and rain. Many are now making the choice to quit the nicotine for good and there are lots of gums, patches and substitute cigarettes to help them do that. But there could be a better way. Consider Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) to help you beat the craving and give up the cigarettes for good.

It’s first important to understand your reasons for wanting to quit. Perhaps the smoking ban has made you reassess you desire for a cigarette – who wants to stand in the freezing cold after all? Maybe people have told you that you constantly smell like an ashtray and you’re starting to feel like an outcast. How do you look? Smoker’s skin is generally in a poorer state than a non-smoker and lines can appear around the mouth from all the thousands of drags on cigarettes – you might be in your thirties but look in your forties. Everyone has a reason to quit so whatever yours is, let NLP help you achieve your goal.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a technique that involves changing our behaviour and way of thinking to help bring about positive changes in our lives. By associating with certain words, phrases or images, we have consciously and sub-consciously programmed our minds to make us act or think in a particular way. If we can understand the pattern of those verbal and non-verbal forms of communication, we are able to change them and create a new map in our mind to make us act in a different way.

To stop smoking, you need to stop the brain from thinking it needs a cigarette. An NLP method that can help you do this is called the ‘swish pattern’. What triggers your desire for a cigarette? Maybe it’s a stressful situation at work or at home. Do you like having a cigarette after a meal? What about those social occasions down the pub when you’ve got a drink in your hand? These are common triggers and represent in your mind when it’s time to reach for the ciggies. So, before you grab that packet, think about what you’d like to do instead. You might decide to go out for a walk, call up a friend, eat some fruit or read a book. Choose something that you’d enjoy doing and use that as your representation.

Now you need to visualise yourself doing this alternative activity. Think about where you’d go for your walk, what you’ll say to your friend, what piece of fruit you’d like to eat or what book you’re going to read. By doing this, you’re starting to disassociate yourself with the cigarettes and you’re now someone who does something positive instead – a new, better you. When you’ve got that visualisation in your mind, make it a stronger and brighter image than the one of you smoking a cigarette. Make the walk on a sunny day, make your conversation fascinating, make the fruit taste sweet or the book so enthralling you can’t put it down. Whatever your choice of representation, make sure it’s better than the one of you smoking.

You should now have a strong representation to call on so let it start small and allow it to grow in your mind until it completely obscures the old one and any triggers that caused you to reach for the cigarettes. Do this each time you get the urge and slowly you’ll overcome your desire to smoke.

NLP has a number of techniques like this one to improve your life and give you confidence to achieve many other goals.

NLP SINGAPORE – What Can You Be If You Have Dyslexia?

Posted by on Aug 20, 2009 in Inspirational Stories, NLP Singapore, Self Improvement |

Hi Friends

What can you be if you have Dyslexia?

Recall the few stories that I have shared previously:

STORY 1

If you lack normal ability to learn (read or write), what can you become? I know someone who has dyslexia. Because of his inability to read or write properly, his primary school teacher thought he was lazy and trying to fool around in school. His friends called him ‘idiot’ or ‘stupid’. His poor family background did not helped him either. How would you feel this happen day after day? What has become of him now?

ANSWER: He now runs a Inline Skating Business and an Outdoor Adventure Club Business. He was featured on TV and he married a ex-school teacher.

STORY 2

He grew up poor, and his family moved around a lot while his father looked for work. He, like his mother, suffered from dyslexia and was put into the remedial classes at school. Because of his dyslexia, he did not do well academically, so he focused on athletics and competed in many sports. A knee injury destroyed his hopes of a promising athletic career. Was that the end of him?

ANSWER: He starred in various movies and probably the most unforgettable ones are ‘Top Gun’, ‘Mission Impossible’, ‘War of the World’, etc. He is ……… Tom Cruise.

STORY 3

When he was young, he didn’t breeze through school. School was a torture and nightmare for him. His scores on standardized tests were dismal, pointing to a dismal future. He was embarrassed by his dyslexia and found his education becoming more and more difficult. What can a person who can’t even learn properly have a future?

ANSWER: One of our ‘Roadmap to Success (NLP Singapore)‘ group member Kristiaan Johannes got it correct. He is Sir Richard Branson. Read one of his book called “Screw It Just Do It”. He is also the 1st person in the world to make space travel a reality. Search for his company called ‘Virgin Galactic’.

If a person spent his/her lifetime complaining about what he/she doesn’t have, start thinking about what talents/assets that he/she has for a change and how to make full use of it.

Studies show that NLP skills can be learned by anyone to improve their effectiveness both personally and professionally.

The Benefits of NLP

by: Gemma Bailey

NLP was created by observing and modeling people who were exceptionally talented within the field of therapy. NLP stands for Neuro-linguistic programming. “Neuro” relating to the brain and “linguistic” refers to the language used, and how it is used. “Programming” describes the patterns and habits you create, learn and persistently follow. As we experience the world through our senses, the information is translated into thoughts/ words. The thoughts affect our physiology, emotions and behaviour which can be heightened or dampened depending on how you use language within your own brain.

Therefore, NLP is the use of effective techniques and strategies to create changes in your thinking and communication to achieve different and better results.

More and more people are realising the value of NLP in enabling them to become more effective in their chosen field. In fact, NLP techniques and models are now being used in a diverse range of areas including education, business and human resources, sport, personal development and health.

Business

NLP techniques enhance a variety of business activities. They are often present in courses about selling, presenting and team-building. Other applications of NLP in business include, teaching people to communicate more effectively and persuasively, public speaking and presentations, detecting decision-making strategies in others, making employee training more effective by working on beliefs, practical tools for employees to achieve peak performance and boosting motivation by aligning work with values. Instant rapport.

Education

NLP provides a model of how we communicate with ourselves and others. NLP can used in teaching to improve the ability to impart information in ways that makes learning easier. For example, identifying natural learning styles, use of presuppositions and language patterns and eliciting states in learners that are congruent with learning.

Sport

NLP is used by sport coaches to aid their clients in reaching and maintaining peak performance. Interventions include modeling and learning successful strategies from leaders in sporting fields, setting performance goals and overcoming plateaus and blocks.

Health

NLP offers a cognitive model and practical tools that can help you improve the health of yourself and others. It is becoming widely accepted within mainstream healthcare that there is a link between our thoughts, behaviour and health. NLP practitioners who choose to work within therapy can help individuals lead more satisfying lives in a number of ways. This may include, helping individuals to change limiting beliefs, habits and behaviour, facilitating people to manage states and emotions and helping individuals to find meaning in life by setting achievable well-formed goals.

The Principles of NLP

The Principles of NLP

By M James

NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) is a set of techniques which are used to have a positive effect on our behavior and communication. The following article explains the principles, and how these relate to the modern working environment.

Neuro Linguistic Programming consists of 4 operational principles:

NLP Principle 1 – Achievement Planning

The successful application of Neuro Linguistic Programming begins with first establishing what you want to achieve. It is only by doing this that you can successfully put in place a strategic NLP plan. This avoids wandering aimlessly and gives you a focus for your attentions and a strategy for achieving your goals and targets.

NLP Principle 2 – Target Awareness

Once you have an NLP plan in place, it is important to make sure that you are on track towards achieving it. Being aware of exactly where you are is vital in order to address your shortcomings and ensure that you do not stray from the established Neuro Linguistic Programming plan. In sensory terms, awareness relates to making sure that your actions elicit the correct response from your clients or co-workers. Reading people’s body language and facial expressions, for example will allow you to establish whether or not your words and actions have the desired effect on your subjects.

NLP Principle 3 – Behavioral Flexibility

In order to achieve your NLP goals, it is important that you have flexibility in your actions and have the ability to vary your behavior until you get the reaction that you want. It is clear that if what you are doing isn’t working, then you need to try something else, so you need to plan for all circumstances and eventualities.

NLP Principle 4 – Take Action

NLP is all about seizing the moment and making positive changes to ones behavior immediately. After all, the sooner you get started, the sooner you can enjoy the positive benefits of NLP within your organization.

Neuro Linguistic Programming can be used in all sorts of workplace environments. Those involved in sales can use NLP to encourage people to buy, or steer potential customers towards or away from a certain product. It can also be used when dealing with complicated situations or when handling difficult clients. NLP can also be used to help you achieve your career goals.

By thinking positive, and deciding what’s important to you, you can work towards reaching your targets.

Now you know more about NLP, how could it help your sales staff and other staff be more productive, and build rapports with customers?
