NLP SINGAPORE – WHAT IS LIFE?

Posted by on Oct 24, 2011 in Inspirational Stories |

Hi Friends

It’s 2:30am right now and I just managed to settle down after our Graduates’ Gathering for my company’s Value Investing Gathering and I  saw this article titled ‘S’pore girl dies after long battle with cancer’. I have read the story at Wan Bao a few days ago but reading it again reminded me of how fragile and how important life can be.

As I am typing this, there will be hundreds and probably thousands in the world that are fighting cancer. For those who are terminal and doctors have pronounced that they have months or weeks to live, they really live each day as if it was their last. Every single day, before they sleep, they will pray that they will be able to open their eyes once more to see the green trees, the leaves that danc……e with the wind, the blue skies with curious-looking clouds, the sound of the chirping birds, the feel of the humid air and the occasional breeze that carress them, and most importantly, being able to see their love ones ……. just one more time …… just one more time. I was once in their shoes. I wished these people will survive the ordeal and that continues to be my wish …..

An exerpt from Steve Jobs Commencement Speech in Stanford University:

“No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish ….. I wish that for all of you.

Cheers!

NLP 101 – 3 SECRETS THAT I HAVE LEARNT FROM DR JOHN GRINDER, CO-FOUNDER OF NLP, THAT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE!

Posted by on Aug 10, 2011 in NLP 101 | 3 comments

Hi Friends

I was off for almost 2 months and finally catch a breath to write this post.

When I started my NLP journey years back, I have always dreamt of meeting one of the Co-Founder of NLP, Dr John Grinder. It came true in Jul 2011 when I went to Brighton, United Kingdom. Do note that Anthony Robbins, one of the world’s top motivational speaker, learnt NLP from Dr John Grinder. Wow! Talking about NLP Guru.

Where is Brighton, UK?

You can check this out:

Brighton has a wonderful beach that instead of having fine sand, it has pebbles on it. If you were there walking bare-footed, you will feel like going for foot massage.

So how does Dr John Grinder looks like when he is in action? He wears something ‘in action’, sports wear. See below.

The first time when I saw him, I simply went over shook his hand, and told him that I finally met him in person. There was so much that I have read about him but seeing him in action, it was a totally awesome! He is really a GENIUS!

Let me share with you 3 SECRETS that I have learnt from John Grinder (my interpretation of his sharing) you can apply into your life and get more than 100% out of your life:

1) SECRET #1 – CALIBRATE, CALIBRATE, CALIBRATE

This was probably the simplest and yet most basic skills taught in NLP. Unfortunately, this was probably never mentioned after Day 1 of any NLP Training. What is calibration? It means observing the non-verbal cues of an individual, especially during the process of communication or NLP intervention. Since most information communicate non-verbally, the ability to observe subtle changes in the non-verbal cues are critical. Why important? Because the “Meaning of any communication is the response you get”. Imagine that you are doing a presentation, a sales pitch, building rapport, etc., calibrating whether your client is responding positively is critical so that you can make changes to your communication methods and thus achieve your outcome. If not, you don’t even know why you have been rejected, and why you did not get the message across. There is a saying that goes like “It’s not what you know but who you know” and in order to know the “who’s who”, you not only need great communication skills but calibration skills as well.

2) SECRET #2 – MANAGING YOUR STATE

Emotions (ie. State) generates responses/behaviours and reponses/behaviours produce OUTCOME and thus changes your LIFE! I recalled he said something like “It’s not scary when you are in a tight situation, but it will be scary when you lose your state”. Tell me about it. Imagine how I felt when my doctor told me that I had cancer last year’s July? I losed my state immediately and I went into a shock for a few days. It took me a few days before I reframed the challenge that I faced and how to move forward with my life. Once I have done that, my state changes into a positive one, and thus my respond to it. During that time, I continued with the launch of my 1st charity project in August 2010, where I donated all of the sales proceeds of my book titled ‘Do You Have What It Takes to Be BOSS?’, to ‘The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund’. This project was featured on 938Live Radio Station ‘The Living Room’ and Straits Times. My fight with Renal Cancer was subsequently published in Straits Times ‘Mind Your Body’ and I was also interviewed on 938Live Radio Station ‘A Slice of Life’.

So how do one create any resourceful state that he/she wants? In the classuc code, NLP Patterns used would be various types Anchoring. Now, the New Code NLP games will be used to generate a high performance state and then subsequently, the client will be placed in the relevant context with the resourceful state so that the context becomes the Trigger.

3) SECRET #3 – CLEAN THIRD

One of our best mentor that we can any time, any where is simply ……….. ourselves. We spent most of our time in our 1st position but rarely, we take a step back, observe ourselves in 3rd position (ie. observer’s position) and then give feedback to ourself on what we have done well and what we can do better. Whne I was in Brighton, I was evaluating myself every single day. That was probably the most thought-provoking moments when I have to praise and critic myself.

So how can you TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE THEN?

I will share with you more on how.

NLP SINGAPORE – HOW DEATH TAUGHT US ABOUT LIFE!

Posted by on Jun 26, 2011 in Inspirational Stories |

Hi Friends

One of the coordinator of Children Cancer Foundation (CCF) passed me a Photo Frame after I have organised a small event for their beneficiaries last Saturday (25th Jun 11), a group of fun-living children who have survived cancer. And on the picture within the photo frame was 2 people lying on a beautiful green patch of grass with a short paragrah and it read:

“THIS PHOTO represents the love I feel from all those around me. When looking at this photo, I feel the deep love between the 2 people in it. Similarly, when I see my friends and family, I can sense how much they care for me ….. I remember the wonderful things they have done for me during my cancer journey ….. My perspective on love between friends, family and lovers would be exactly how everyone would view this photo – simple, yet beautiful.” ~ Tracy, 16 Years Old (Survivor of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia).

Along the way to the event venue in a Coach, I was chatting with the coordinator of CCF and I wanted to know what other things any member of the public can help. I asked a question about  how terminally-illed children patients cope with the last few weeks or even days of their life. She shared that one initiative CCF has is to grant them a last wish before the patient leave. She shared about a case where a young teenager wanted to fulfil her last wish – which is to be a Chef. CCF quickly make arrangements where the teenager can visit a Professional Chef so that her dream can come true. Unfortunately, after arrangements were made, the patient suffered a relapse and she no longer is fit to realised her dream. However, the Chef initiated to bring all his cooking equipments to the patient’s home. Eventually, the patient was dressed up like a professional Chef at home and she had such a memorable & wonderful time with the Chef even though she was physically lethargic. Her DREAM came true. She became a Chef for that day ………. and she left subsequently ………….. I almost teared after hearing the story as it reminded of those days when I had renal cancer. I told the CCF Coordinator that I wanted to be a Sponsor to make the Dreams of the terminally-illed patients come true and I really mean it. I really hope that all of their patients survived and I will never receive any phone call from them. But if they really need me, I will always be ready to support the patient to make their last wish come true!

In about 1.5 months time, I will be having my next CT Scan and it will also be my One-Year Anniversary of Cancer Remission. Every single time when I received the CT Scan Results and it shows negative, I felt that I have been granted at least another 6 months to live and I am happy to live and make the best out of it. The best part about being able to wake up and live to see another day is not about how much money I make, or whether I appear in the Radio or Press, or whether did I became popular each day. It’s just a simple thing that I wanted, the exact same thing that I wanted when I woke up every single day when I was warded last year after my cancer treatment – to be able to open my eyes again and see my loved ones again, be able to look at the beautiful sky, the evergreen trees with their leaves swaying in rhythm with the gentle breeze. Nothing more.

As you start a Brand New Week again. Let me share a quote with you – “I remember promising myself that should I live, I would prove myself deserving of life” ~ Terry Fox, who died because of cancer but he raised millions of dollars through his Marathon of Hope during his last days. But we all lived to see another day. Will you promise yourself that you will prove yourself to be deserving of LIFE? I know you will!

Cheers  to LIFE!

NLP 101 – HOW NLP WAS BORN

Posted by on May 16, 2011 in NLP 101 |

Dear Friends

Many thought that NLP was a new tool. In fact, it started way back in 1970s and has evolved and time tested across across 40 years. Some pointers about the history of NLP are as follows:
• NLP began in early 1970s, when Richard Bandler (a psychology student I University of California Santa Cruz) was transcribing a taped therapy session by Gestalt Therapist Fritz Perls
• Bandler found certain patterns of Perls language which increase its acceptance by clients
• Bandler brought his findings to John Grinder (a linguist) and they produced “Meta Model”
• Bandler & Grinder subsequently modelled after 3 extraordinary psychotherapist: Fritz Perls (Psychotherapist), Virginia Satir (Family Therapist), Dr Milton Erickson (Hypnotherapist) and uncovered the patterns of human excellence
• Went on to model after achievers in other fields (business, sports, education, health, etc) and identify their common structure – NLP was born
• Both of their initial discoveries were recorded in 4 books between 1975 and 1977. The books were called “The Structure of Magic I & II”, “Patterns I & II” and 2 books on Erickson’s hypnotherapy work
• NLP was then evolved into 2 complementary directions: 1) As a process to discover the patterns of excellence in any field, 2) As the effective ways of thinking and communicating used by outstanding individuals

Bandler and Grinder reviewed many hours of audio and video of the top 3 psychotherapists spent months imitating how they worked with clients, in order to replicate or ‘model’ the communication patterns which supposedly made these individuals more successful than their peers. While the style and approach of these psychotherapists were apparently different, Bandler and Grinder believed that all experts in human communication (including Perls, Satir and Erickson) have patterns in common that could be learnt by others. They claimed that there were a few common traits expert communicators – whether top therapists, top executives or top salespeople – all seemed to share.

NLP SINGAPORE – WHAT IS WORSE THAN DEATH?

Posted by on May 5, 2011 in Inspirational Stories | 2 comments

Dear Friends

Whenever I conduct NLP Training, there will always be a small group of who will asked me about how I felt and how I managed when I was diagnosed with cancer previously. Well, it wasn’t easy. Not only for me but my love ones too. In my opinion, is there anything more frightening than death? Yes, it’s not watching your love ones die, but watching your love ones live ……. but they don’t remember you. As I am typing this, there will  be some people out there, somewhere out there, despite having financial, physical and mental challenges, you are and still taking care of your love ones …. who suffered from dementia.

This Korean Movie titled ‘A Moment To Remember’ reminded me how to treasure the love ones around us when I still remember them:

Do you know what the leading actress meant by ‘heaven’ when she asked ‘Is this heaven?’
