Anthony Robbins NLP

By Chris Dreyer

Anthony Robbins is born Anthony J. Mahavick in February 29, 1960. Self-help writer, professional speaker and occasional actor are just some of the qualifications under his belt. With his best-selling books, he managed to touch and changed numerous lives, introducing the science behind the sense personal awareness. Robbins is known as a writer of topics that focuses on health and energy, overcoming fears, the power of effective persuasive communication and relationships. Through his numerous infomercials, he has become a worldwide phenomenon, promoting personal development with his audio programs and motivational seminars. He primarily makes use of neuro-linguistic programming or NLP and various hypnosis techniques in his claims of personal awareness. A good communicator, speaker, healer and life coach, Robbins combines his skills with unconventional and conventional persuasive techniques to promote personal change.

With only high school education in tow, Robbins have managed to create an empire with his gift of better understanding of life and human nature in combination with his excellent communication skills. His first vocation, being in sales, was his initial practice of his inherent knowledge of persuasion. His fondness for personal growth books only helped him develop and refine is remarkable ability to promote positivity and confidence from among his listeners and readers. In 1983, Robbins was have grown interest in NLP, a then new and promising technique that is claimed to be effective in promoting instant and positive transformation by directly altering the unconscious “programs” of the human mind.

Robbins has started practicing NLP in his career after learning its principles directly from its co-founder, John Grinder. Working with the perception that human capabilities is relative to his self-awareness, such principles have significantly helped him refine his thoughts, which eventually has catapulted his career and popularity. As one of the practices of NLP, Grinder has convinced Robbins to look into firewalking. From the principles of NLP, Robbins has later on introduced NAC or Neuro-Associative Conditioning, making use of the term conditioning rather than programming. He claims that “conditioning” implies that the subject has a greater responsibility for his or her own change while “programming” accounts the change to someone else.

Robbins was drawn into the principles that NLP entails since it very much applicable in his practice of promoting self-help. He then took the principles of NLP in his series of television and radio programs, which have significantly helped NLP be widely accepted by the public. Understandably, Robbins had faced the lashing words of skeptics. In response, having witnessed the dramatic change that NLP has brought in improving the way his supporters lived their lives, he publicly challenged his critic psychiatrists to work with their toughest patients or case in front of live audience. In the said program, Robbins has cured a woman of her phobia of snakes, a case that were handled by a professional psychiatrist for years. What’s amazing is that he had cured the woman in only fifteen minutes. From then on, the public has grown interest in his seminars, books and whatever he is working on.

Videos – What is NLP?

What is NLP?

Watch the below youtube videos.  It may take some time for loading.

What is NLP? by Richard Bandler

What is NLP? by John Grinder

The 2 co-founders of NLP (Richard Bandler & John Grinder) talks about what NLP is. If I may summarised for you, Richard Bandler in his video defines “NLP is the study of the Structure of Subjectivity” whereas John Grinder defines “NLP is the Modelling of Excellence”. You might be confused especially when you watch John Grinder’s video which is why you can’t learn NLP just by reading books, listening to audio CDs or learning online.

Let me share with you how NLP has already influenced you without you knowing in your daily life. If you drive along the road and you see red traffic light, may I ask what will you do? You will definitely say “Stop”.

The question is “Who told you to stop?”. Answers that I get from my participants range from the law, the driving centre, traffic police, etc.

All the answers are correct. The driver has been trained to stop when they see red light. In NLP perspective, the information you see (ie. red light) goes through one of your 5 senses (ie. Visual) which is the “NEURO’ of Neuro-linguistic Programming since information is communicated via our nervous system.

When the information goes into our mind, we unconsciously label our experience as “Stop” which is the “LINGUISTIC” of Neuro-linguistic Programming. Our right leg then automatically step on the brakes because it has already been conditioned or “PROGRAMMED” to do so.

If you can programme your mind to step on the brake, brush your teeth, eat your breakfast or even do a Banji Jump. You already have the ability to programme your mind to be constantly motivated such that you can make more money, excel in your career, gain confidence, improve your relationship, etc. It’s a matter of HOW!

Studies show that NLP skills can be learned by anyone to improve their effectiveness both personally and professionally.

The Principles of NLP

Posted by on Jul 31, 2009 in NLP 101, NLP Introduction, NLP Singapore |

The Principles of NLP

By M James

NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) is a set of techniques which are used to have a positive effect on our behavior and communication. The following article explains the principles, and how these relate to the modern working environment.

Neuro Linguistic Programming consists of 4 operational principles:

NLP Principle 1 – Achievement Planning

The successful application of Neuro Linguistic Programming begins with first establishing what you want to achieve. It is only by doing this that you can successfully put in place a strategic NLP plan. This avoids wandering aimlessly and gives you a focus for your attentions and a strategy for achieving your goals and targets.

NLP Principle 2 – Target Awareness

Once you have an NLP plan in place, it is important to make sure that you are on track towards achieving it. Being aware of exactly where you are is vital in order to address your shortcomings and ensure that you do not stray from the established Neuro Linguistic Programming plan. In sensory terms, awareness relates to making sure that your actions elicit the correct response from your clients or co-workers. Reading people’s body language and facial expressions, for example will allow you to establish whether or not your words and actions have the desired effect on your subjects.

NLP Principle 3 – Behavioral Flexibility

In order to achieve your NLP goals, it is important that you have flexibility in your actions and have the ability to vary your behavior until you get the reaction that you want. It is clear that if what you are doing isn’t working, then you need to try something else, so you need to plan for all circumstances and eventualities.

NLP Principle 4 – Take Action

NLP is all about seizing the moment and making positive changes to ones behavior immediately. After all, the sooner you get started, the sooner you can enjoy the positive benefits of NLP within your organization.

Neuro Linguistic Programming can be used in all sorts of workplace environments. Those involved in sales can use NLP to encourage people to buy, or steer potential customers towards or away from a certain product. It can also be used when dealing with complicated situations or when handling difficult clients. NLP can also be used to help you achieve your career goals.

By thinking positive, and deciding what’s important to you, you can work towards reaching your targets.

Now you know more about NLP, how could it help your sales staff and other staff be more productive, and build rapports with customers?

Neurolingustic Programming (NLP) – A Brief Introduction

By Phil Mattingly

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a body of knowledge made up of two parts. The first is an attitude or philosophy, the second a set of tools and techniques created by that philosophy.

The simplest definition of the attitude is that ‘subjective human experience has a structure that can be usefully manipulated.’

What does that mean? Well, ‘subjective human experience’ refers to each human’s unique and personal experience of reality. For example, if three people are on board the same aircraft flying from London to New York, one might find the experience exciting, another very dull and the third terrifying. Even though each of them is doing roughly the same thing, they have their own unique and personal experience of it.

NLP takes the approach that this experience has a structure; it is not random but governed by rules and the law of cause and effect. If these rules are understood, then the experience can be usefully manipulated – turning fear into excitement for example.

Given this attitude, it is possible to experiment with the rules to see if a particular change in a person’s experience will produce a particular effect. Once you discover that changing one thing systematically changes another, you have a technique that can be repeated. This is the second part of NLP – all the techniques and tools that have been created by experimentation with the structure of subjective experience.

An example of NLP

To experience NLP for yourself, try the following experiment. Read the instructions first, memorise the steps and then try them out.

  1. Close your eyes and think about someone that you love. Notice what image comes to mind when you think of this person. Pay attention to the feelings this image evokes and be aware of how intense they are.
  2. Pretend that you can push this image away into the distance until it looks small and far away. Be aware of any change in the intensity of your feelings about it.
  3. Pretend that you can bring the image close to you and make it larger and brighter. Again, be aware of any change in the intensity of you feelings.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 a few times and check whether they consistently produce the same result.

For many people who do this experiment pushing the picture further away decreases the intensity. Bringing it closer and making it larger is equally reliable in increasing the intensity of feeling. It does not matter if your experience is the same – each person’s experience is different – but you should at least notice that changes in the way you see the image consistently and predictably affect how you feel about it.

So, your subjective experience – the image of the person you love – has a structure (it’s size and distance from you) that can be usefully manipulated (varied to increase the intensity of pleasant feelings).

NLP Techniques

Since its beginnings in the 1970s, the attitude of NLP has been adopted by many people who have used it to conduct experiments. As a result, many techniques or patterns have been identified which predictably and usefully affect a person’s subjective experience.

For example, the fast phobia cure is an NLP technique which predictably and usefully reduces the fear a person experiences when exposed to something that frightens them. This could be anything from a spider to an enclosed space to the experience of driving on a busy road.

There are many such techniques and they can be broadly classified into two groups.

Personal techniques allow a person to affect some part of their own experience. For example, NLP can be used by presenters and performers to put themselves in a confident and energetic state before going on stage. Other personal NLP techniques can help a person be more effective in setting goals, thinking clearly, motivating themselves and much more.

Communication techniques allow a person to affect how they interact with others. NLP includes techniques for building rapport and trust with other people, for persuading them and for hypnotizing them.

A brief history of NLP

NLP was first developed in the 1970s by two men. John Grinder was a linguistics professor and Richard Bandler a computer scientist. Much of the development came from studies the two men made of successful people. They identified various patterns and structures that were present in the way these people behaved, thought and experienced the world. That process of studying or modelling formed much of the attitude of NLP, and the resulting patterns formed many of the techniques.

Among the first group of successful people studied were several outstanding therapists. These included Fritz Perls, the gestalt therapist, Virginia Satir, the family therapist and psychiatrist and hypnotist Dr.Milton Erickson. As such, many of the early NLP patterns had a significant therapeutic element and many of the early adopters of NLP were therapists.

Over time however the technology has advanced and is now increasingly popular with all kinds of people include salespeople, managers, trainers and those interested in self-development.

In Summary

NLP is both an attitude and a collection of techniques created by that attitude. It centers on that belief that subjective human experience has a structure that can be usefully manipulated. Experiments based on this belief have created many techniques. These allow a person to influence and affect themselves and others more effectively. From early beginnings in the 1970s, NLP has grown to be accepted and practiced worldwide.
